Businesses In Puerto Rico Can Receive An Energy Rebate For Going Green

Going green has gone very well for many businesses around the country that have benefited from energy efficiencies.  The promotion of using sustainable energy equipment in non-residential facilities has been a big hit with businesses all around the country, including our U.S. territories. Businesses are eligible for an energy rebate when they switch to more efficient equipment in their facilities.

Puerto Rico is running a State Rebate Program called the Building Energy Efficiency Retrofit Program that encourages energy efficiencies in local businesses. Companies that implement energy-saving measures in their facilities not only reduce energy costs, but also help to promote a healthy environment through using green energy. Commercial, non-profit and government sectors in Puerto Rico can upgrade to commercial equipment that is designed to reduce energy consumption.

The Building Energy Efficiency Rebate Program offers rebates to businesses that implement energy efficiency upgrade recommendations made after prospective businesses participate in a Facility Energy Audit. The program requires that only a registered architect or licensed professional engineer  can audit the facilities. Applicants need to turn in the application form in addition to supplying documents as they are outlined to reserve the rebate before any money is spent on the energy efficiency project.

If the project is approved, applicants will receive a notice indicating approval and the energy rebate amount they will receive. Once the letter is received, the applicant must sign the Rebate Agreement in fifteen days, complete the project in six months and undergo an AFI/EAA inspection. The AFI/EAA Installation Certificate and the Rebate Claim Form are needed in order for businesses to receive their rebate. Businesses that receive incentives under this program cannot receive any other assistance in regards to energy rebates, other than the developing revolving loan program, for the project that they have received this funding for.

The Retrofit Program includes such energy efficiencies as lighting, lighting controls/chillers and condensing units. Commercial businesses and non-profits can receive 50% of eligible costs, while government sectors can receive 100%. The maximum incentive for an energy rebate is $200,000 and facility audit incentives are up to $5,000. Puerto Rico’s Building Energy Efficiency Rebate program expires on September 30, 2010, or until funds run out.
