DC Utility Company Shows It Pays to Switch to Fluorescent High Bay Lighting

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, about 7% of all energy consumed in the U.S. is from lighting. Just think of all energy consumption in schools, health care facilities and such use in any given day. Many of these industries are switching to fluorescent high bay lighting to replace less energy-efficient measures. For many new and exiting facilities, maximum efficiency is the order of the day.

Commercial and industrial businesses expend a great deal of energy on lighting, so there is a national effort to help companies use this type of energy more efficiently.  Washington DC’s Pepco C&I Energy features attractive lighting incentives for non-residential customers. These incentives were formulated to encourage companies to replace T12 fluorescents and standard metal halide fixtures with updated technology such as fluorescent high bay lighting.

Both new and existing facilities can showcase lighting that has automatic turn on and off features as well as natural light enhancement features designed to decrease energy usage. Pepco Energy wants to help its customers to use their equipment in a cost effective and energy-efficient manner. Pepco rewards its commercial customers with energy efficiency incentives in three ways:

  • The Standard Program is designed to upgrade or replace existing features.  Customers are awarded incentives for replacing less efficient measures with more effective measures or by maximizing what customers already have by using T8, T5 or compact fluorescent lighting.
  • The Alternative is designed to fill in the gap for those programs that are not eligible for the standard program because it may be a lighting fixture that isn’t one of the typical categories. The proposed energy program must show it saves energy and meet certain criteria and efficiency standards and qualifications before a proposed energy program is begun.
  • The Design-Based Program is intended for new construction and major renovation projects. This aspect of the incentive program is a work in progress, however.

All prospective participants in the Pepco C&I Energy Savings Program need to first be a non-residential electric customer of Pepco.  In addition, they need to operate within the Pepco territory. As with most state utility rebate programs, the project must be pre-approved  before equipment is bought or installed. Equipment that was bought or installed prior to August 13, 2009 is ineligible for cash incentives. Customers can get back $250,000 per year for each technology with a maximum rebate of $500,000.  More detailed information and an online application can be found on Pepco’s website at: www.cienergyefficiency.pepco.com
