Government Gives Ohio Businesses Incentives To “Go Green”

The words “go green” are more than just popular buzz words that everyone likes to use. They symbolize a national motto that propels our nation into a concerted effort to utilize our natural resources in new and innovative ways. Energy efficiencies are available in every state to give commercial constituents a financial incentive to support the green initiative. The Ohio government is promoting national conservation efforts by offering green energy rebates.

Ohio encourages its commercial customers to go green by offering rebate programs for energy efficient equipment. Duke Energy’s Utility Rebate Program offers rebates of up to $50,000 a year for industries and businesses and $100,000 for schools. The specifics on equipment requirements vary greatly depending on the type of equipment and efficiency.  More detailed information about eligibility and requirements can be found on the program application on Duke Energy’s website at: www.duke-energy.com

In addition, some Duke Energy commercial customers may also be eligible for the Custom Incentive Program, which rewards businesses and school for their energy conservation efforts. Customers can receive cash incentives for taking measures to use their energy resources to operate energy efficient facilities. To get started, customers must:

  • Be a Duke commercial or industrial electric customer.
  • Have not opted out of the Energy Efficient Rider.
  • Submit a completed Custom Incentive application and questionnaire that outlines the project’s objectives, costs and implementation before the project begins.

Ohio also fosters its “go green!” campaign through Dayton Power and Light’s Business and Government Energy Efficiency Rebate Program. Non-residential electricity customers are eligible for unlimited energy efficient technology rebates for any piece of eligible equipment they of which they 10% or more control over (national or chain accounts are considered to be one customer). Non-residential customers can receive rebates when they replace existing electricity-powered equipment with an energy efficient measure that demonstrates a track record of savings over the payback period, which is five years or longer. The equipment must surpass required minimum efficiency standards.

Rebates are not available for measures that are a part of new construction projects, equipment that increase energy consumption from other systems or a non-residential institution already receives rebates from another utility rebate program.  There is a quick turnaround of funds after the system is inspected, which is within 30 days. More detailed information about this program is available on the Database of Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency or (DSIRE) at: www.dsireusa.org.
