High bay fixtures are being widely used in commercial buildings to replace HID lighting systems. Commercial buildings consume a great deal of energy due to their size as well as some of the less energy efficient equipment in their facilities. Cost-effective, energy-saving lighting helps companies save money and conserve energy.
High bay fixtures have several advantages over the HID system, including improved color quality and less energy consumption. Fluorescent lighting uses about 25% of the energy produced by older lighting technology while giving the same quality output. Fluorescent high bays are reliable, energy-efficient technologies that are rapidly growing in popularity in the lighting industry.
States are giving businesses a hand in recouping the cost of installing energy efficient lighting equipment. The state of Alaska is promoting energy efficiency through the Golden Valley Electric Association. GVEA offers the Business Sense Program to give businesses an attractive incentive for upgrading their lighting measures. Businesses can receive up to $1,000 per kW or 50% of the project cost, but a maximum of $20,000 for each project.
Lighting equipment takes up about one fifth of the nation’s electrical consumption, so these energy-efficient measures could help Alaskan businesses to significantly reduce their energy bills. GVEA customers who are on a commercial rate( GS-1 or GS2 ) and are existing structures are eligible for rebates. Commercial customers that are interested in lighting retrofit program need to submit a proposal detailing their project plans and cost estimates. If both parties agree, then a project inspection takes place before the plan is implemented.
The incentives are offered on a first-come serve basis, so if the money is available, both parties can sign off on the partnership to promote energy efficiencies. Commercial customers who install high bay fixtures along with other technologies can receive energy rebates for their companies. Alaska’s non-residential customers can get more information about this program on the GVEA website at: www.gvea.com.
