Minnesota Businesses Get Cash Incentives For T5 Fluorescent Lighting Upgrades

Almost 10% of our national energy consumption comes from lighting, which primarily comes from large buildings. Lighting is an essential component of residential and commercial business life and must be utilized to a large degree. Commercial facilities are coming up with efficient ways to use lighting in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Businesses can upgrade to T5 fluorescent lighting to conserve energy and save money in their commercial buildings.

Fluorescent lighting is mainly used as a replacement for older fixtures that do not render as much light and consume more energy. T5 fluorescents use between 25% and 30% less energy, so companies can save money on their operating costs. Energy efficient equipment is being promoted in business facilities to help the environment and improve business costs.

Energy rebates are being offered to companies nationwide for upgrading their equipment to energy-saving measures. Minnesota-based Connexus Energy offers rebates for switching to lighting retrofits in commercial, industrial and agricultural facilities. These large building lighting upgrades include high bay fluorescent lighting, such as T5 fluorescents.

Minnesota’s Connexus Energy Company offers incentives to businesses that buy and install certain prescribed lighting fixtures in their existing facilities. Fluorescent lighting fixtures such as T5’s are based on one-for-one replacement of incandescent fixtures and T12 fluorescent lamps controlled by magnetic ballasts. Businesses who do not meet the required lighting products under the prescriptive plan may still qualify under the custom program, pending project review and approval.

T5 fluorescent lighting upgrades for Minnesota businesses can yield a maximum of less than 50% of the project cost or $100,000. Retrofit projects can get a maximum of $150,000 with prior approval from Great River Energy. All prospective projects for energy efficiency incentives must apply for 2010 rebates by the November 30, 2010 deadline.
