New York Public Sector Can Save Money with High Bay Fixtures

President Obama is making good on his campaign promise to invest in renewable and sustainable energy. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is a solid green initiative that says: we are not just talking the talk, but we are walking the walk.  Millions of dollars have been filtered down to the states to give Americans the financial resources they need to join get in on the action and do their part. Energy efficient high bay fixtures are an effective and easy way to get started with investing in green energy.

High bay fluorescent lighting is bright, durable and uses less energy than HID fixtures. Most state utility companies around the country are wooing customers to go green by giving them financial incentives to make the switch to high bay fixtures. New York’s Long Island Power Authority offers the Commercial Energy Efficiency Rebate Program for commercial, industrial, non-profits, schools etc. to offset their energy efficient utility costs. The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) offers several incentives to encourage non-commercial customers to maximize their energy usage in their facilities through its Commercial Construction Program.

This program is not just limited to new construction, but also extends to existing buildings that undergo major renovations as well. All Custom and Whole Building Design projects must be pre-approved before equipment is bought or installed. The Commercial Construction Program offers three options to choose from to help meet the particular needs of their customers:

  • The Prescriptive Program offers up to $100,000 a year per project with a maximum of $300,000 for each customer for a pre-qualified list of energy-efficient equipment, including high bay fixture lighting equipment.
  • The Custom Program offers rebates up to $200,000 a year per building with a $600,000 annual cap for each customer for more comprehensive green energy efforts for certain businesses that are not covered under the prescriptive program.
  • The Whole Building Design Program offers a generous $400,000 annual rebate per building. Each customer can receive a total amount $800,000 to build a multi-faceted green energy facility with the added bonus of LIPA technical assistance to help non-residential customers purchase and make the most of their energy efficiencies. The incentives cannot be more than LIPA electric savings, however. LEED-Certified Green Buildings may receive up to half a million dollars for each building project.

The exact rebate amount for each technology, such as lighting, for example, is decided upon as each case is assessed and processed. More detailed information about each rebate incentive is available on the LIPA website at http://www.lipower.org/efficiency/commercial.

High bay fixtures can help save non-residential customers money and energy usage for their schools and business facilities. Programs such as New York’s Long Island Power Authority Rebate Program give customers a helping hand as they partner in the green energy initiative. New York commercial customers can “walk the walk” with proven energy efficient equipment to save money and support our national environmental cause.
